Welcome to the team!
When I have a new hire starting on Monday, I always make a point on Saturday to prepare their workspace, where they’ll spend the first day doing training. When a new hire walks into the building, I greet them with a smile and say, 'Welcome to the team.'
On their first day, I take them on a tour of the branch, introduce them to any colleagues who might be in the building, and then surprise them with a welcome table. It’s worth the effort to go above and beyond welcoming new hires. If you show that you care, they’re going to care.
Lunch is on me!
I take them to lunch and engage in conversations that help them feel like they’ve been part of the team for a while. I like to talk about how the company changed my life, the different positions that I’ve taken, my career, and future opportunities. I ask them questions just to get to know them, and by the end of our lunch, I want them to feel comfortable, as if we’ve known each other forever.
Meet your colleagues!
We have a branch meeting every week, and before it starts, I like to make sure the new hire comes in early, so we can prepare. During the meeting, I’ll do a big introduction and make sure all the colleagues who haven’t met them are introduced. Then, we’ll take a moment to catch up with everyone on the team by sharing what’s going on.
