Conversations with recruiter, Kyia

Posting date: 20/24/24

Starting her career with us as a Customer Service Supervisor, Kyia became interested in recruiting when her former manager observed how she put a lot of thought and care into interviewing candidates for her team. Now, she excels as a recruiter, specializing in technicians for our Terminix and Rentokil North America brands in the Central Market. Discover more about her approach and what she looks for in candidates.

Why Talent Acquisition, and what specifically attracted you to be a recruiter for Rentokil Terminix?

I chose to come to TA because I believe it’s so important to a company’s success. I take great pride and ownership in the quality of candidates that I send to my hiring managers. It’s been incredible learning a new role after spending most of my professional career in customer service. Taking this leap was scary, but so worth it. Turns out, I’m good at this! It’s also brought out my competitive side but in a good way. I want to be a great recruiter, and I want to build great relationships with hiring managers. That way, I’ll know exactly what they’re looking for when they reach out to me, and they’ll know that I can find the right people for the job. I’ve been in the pest control industry on and off since 2013. Back when we were still working in an office, I spent a lot of time with our technicians and entomologists, learning as much as I could about the work they do. The knowledge I gained then is very helpful now, when candidates ask me questions about the job description.

What qualities or skills do you look for in candidates, and how do these traits contribute to success with the company?

I’m not looking for people with all the technical answers, because we can teach that. I’m looking for good, kind people who show up on time and are willing to learn. I like to find people who I think would be kind to my grandmother at her front door because I think that’s a good indication of how they will treat our customers. Customer service is a huge part of our technician roles. If they are willing to educate customers, ask questions when they don’t know answers, and know when to reach out for help, they’ll likely have a great career here.

Do you have any advice for those looking to join the team?

In the grand scheme of things, there are always going to be more bugs than people on this planet. They were here long before us, and they’ll be here long after us. We know that bugs will always exist, so we work to keep them out of our homes and businesses. Our industry is constantly changing and improving, and we must stay one step ahead of these brilliant creatures. If you’re a Pest Control Technician, you have a fascinating job. Whether you work with general pests, termites, bedbugs, or any of the many other types of pests, there’s always something new to learn. I wish I could handle being close to live bugs because I would love to be a technician myself! Instead, I’ll just keep recruiting strong people who aren’t afraid to do this important job for us.
